Stunning Sicilian Vistas

Guest post by Cindy Amoroso. She visited Sicily with AT Escapes, and shared her experiences and photos from the trip.

Have you ever wanted to spend time at the seashore, in awe of the many hues of blue and turquoise?  How about hiking a volcano?  Do you enjoy vistas of golden wheat or verdant green orchards and vineyards?  Mountains and rocky formations reaching to the sky?  Love to marvel at the sunset flaming over the horizon?  All of this, and more, can be found when traveling in Sicily.  It is an island that offers stunning landscapes.

Mountains, beach and sea

I expected beautiful views of the sea, and I wasn’t disappointed.  Because so many popular areas in Sicily are near the sea, we were never far from the gorgeous blues and greens of its waters.  Our drives produced different sea views around every bend.  Although we weren’t on a beach vacation, we still took the opportunities we had to enjoy a gelato, meal, or an aperitif along the waters, relaxing in the time we had. There were many times, however, that I looked longingly at the lidos, filled with sunbathers, as we walked by!

The beautiful blues of Sicily’s waters

There are five mountain ranges found in Sicily.  That means that almost anywhere we went, we either traveled the inclines or viewed them in the distance.  My first view of Sicily, from the plane, was of peaks as we flew in and around them to land.  The most famous mountain in Sicily is Mt. Etna, the most active volcano in Europe.

While any of these mountainous areas provide outdoor opportunities, we did a short hike of Mt. Etna and were wowed by the experience.  Although above the tree line, and with the ground made up of granular lava, beautiful clusters of flowers and grasses grew among this black sand.  We loved watching the sun set over the mountains to the west of Ortigia as we sat on our seaside terrace. There was something about the colors of those sunsets–the red and orange–that was different than we’d experienced before.

Ortigia sunset over the mountains and the Bay of Ortigia

After several days staying in towns along the sea and in the mountains, it was a surprise as we drove through vast agricultural fields.  It was fun to see them change, from vineyards to acres of hothouses growing different vegetables, to verdant expanses of fruit orchards, and then the seas of waving wheat.

It was a different Sicily than we had been experiencing.  Our driver, D, explained the agricultural history of Sicily, and the important role this part of the island plays in its economy.  It was also fun to know where so much of the fresh fruit and vegetables we saw at the markets were coming from.

On our second-to-the-last-night in Sicily, (I know–that’s a mouthful!) as I sat on our seaside terrace, I thought about the fact that I was listening to the sound of the waves as they lapped against the seawall, seeing the smoke from the fields in the distance while watching the sun set over the mountain to the west.  What a way to end our trip.  We hadn’t chosen to visit Sicily for its landscape; however, on a return trip, I will be looking forward to experiencing all these different areas and the remarkable views they provide.
